Watching the antics of so many in positions of leadership it’s clear that they don’t understand everyone is watching…and takes their lead from what they see. What they see is what they do, believing it to be an example of the company culture. After all, if the leaders act that way it must be what is expected.

Why does this matter? As Steve Ballmer, CEO Microsoft, says, “everything I do is a reinforcement or not of what we want to have happen culturally.”

Culture is the collection of shared attitudes, values, practices, and actions that underlie the way an organization functions. A company’s culture guides what it’s people do and how they do it. Culture fosters energized, involved, committed, engaged employees…and customers…or it doesn’t.

“Culture is your company’s number one asset,” Ginni Rometty, CEO IBM.

Culture helps build success, or facilitates mediocrity. Which would you prefer?

Exemplify the culture always. Set an example. Balance both the rational and the emotional. Be vigilant and call out those violating the standards. Keep it simple and understandable.

And always remember that people are watch everything you do and place value on actions rather than words. Communication reinforces but does not set the tone.

It’s a heavy burden to be a leader. People watch everything. Too many think the little things don’t matter but, in fact, the little things often matter the most. Everything really does mean everything. And it all matters.

Never forget, someone is always watching.
